Receiving disability benefits from Social Security comes with many rights and responsibilities. If you are receiving benefits on behalf of a child, here is some important information about his or her benefits you should know.
Age 18
Unless your child is disabled, or an unmarried full-time elementary or secondary school student, then their benefits will stop the month before they reach the age of 18. Approximately three months before your child turns 18, you will receive a letter informing how their benefits can continue. Your child will also receive a letter and student form from Social Security.
If your child becomes disabled before the age of 22, or becomes a full-time elementary or secondary school student before the age of 19, then they can reapply and receive benefits again.
Student
If your child is a full-time elementary or secondary school student, they can receive benefits until they are 19 years old. Once they hit 19, benefits can continue until one of these scenarios occurs: they complete the proceeding school term, or two months after they turn 19.
If your child will be on vacation for up to four months, they can continue to receive benefits if they plan on returning to school full-time at the end of the vacation.
Disabled
If your child has a disability that begins before they are 22 years old, they can continue to receive benefits after 18 and may also qualify for SSI disability benefits.
If you have a stepchild and get divorced
If you have a stepchild that is receiving benefits based on your employment, and you divorce the child’s parent, your stepchild’s benefit will stop the month after the divorce becomes final. Make sure you seek guidance before the divorce becomes final.

I have a question, my granddaughter was born with Turner Syndrome and is age 7 now
she is about 4′ tall and is not expected to get much taller unless she has growth hormones,
she is now starting to experance some of the problems that go with Turners. Would she possibly be a canadate for SSI? Her parants are struggling with medical and dental care.
And i’m affraid it’s just going to get worse.
